What Exactly is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding, also known as hydraulic mulch seeding, is a process through which a slurry is made by mixing seed, a combination of fertilizer and other additives, mulch and water, in order to establish vegetation and prevent the erosion of barren land. This mixture is normally sprayed directly onto the ground from a tank that is mounted on the back of a truck. The most common method used in the manufacture of the slurry is by pouring the ingredients into the tank and then using an agitation system, be it mechanical or through the use of special jets, to create a homogeneous mixture, which is then transported to the area in which it will be applied.

Hydroseeding: A Hard Task Made Easy

Hydroseeding first appeared during the 1960s, but only recently has it become one of the most favored methods of delivery for large areas in need of ground cover. Its popularity has increased for several reasons, but the most important ones are the speed at which the seed can be delivered, the ease with which the job can be performed, a significant reduction in labor costs and time invested, and improved erosion control.

Additionally, hydroseeding allows for the use of any type of grass or ground cover seed, including pasture grass, athletic field covers, wildflowers, and mixes employed in the control of erosion, while offering a better distribution and germination. This, due to the fact that the mulch included with the mixture acts as a feeding medium for the seed, which in turn will germinate at a faster rate than when planted by hand.

As if that weren’t enough, because all the ingredients required for successful germination are delivered in a single sitting, complete coverage will be achieved in a shorter time, which in turn will cut down on labor costs, making it a good way to save money while getting the job done as quickly as possible.
